What is primary packaging and what is secondary packaging?

Cardboard packaging is basically divided into two main groups: primary (product) packaging and secondary (transport) packaging. Primary packaging is the packaging in which the product is directly placed and is intended for product presentation at the point of sale. Secondary packaging mainly serves for the protection and transport of products and usually surrounds several primary packages.

Based on the material from which the packaging is made, we distinguish between two internationally recognized systems for packaging design and production: ECMA – carton packaging and FEFCO – corrugated cardboard packaging. The main purpose of both systems is the unified classification of packaging structures using standardized codes understood by packaging manufacturers all over the world, regardless of language or country.

ECMA (European Carton Makers Association) focuses mainly on folding carton packaging used for packing consumer products.

The organization brings together carton packaging manufacturers across Europe and develops standards for folding box constructions. The most important standard is the ECMA Code, which includes numerous carton box constructions with clearly defined dimensions and closing methods.

Due to the large number of different carton packaging models, ECMA constructions are divided into several groups (A, B, C, D, E), which enables easier classification of packaging according to construction.

You can also read more information in our article: ECMA and FEFCO packaging standards.

FEFCO (European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers) focuses mainly on corrugated cardboard packaging, which is most commonly used for transport boxes, storage and industrial product packaging.

FEFCO develops standardized constructions for transport boxes made of corrugated cardboard and supports the development of the industry in the fields of technical standards, statistics, environmental issues and the promotion of sustainable packaging.

In both cases, we use a material that is generally called cardboard for packaging production. According to ISO standards, paper with a grammage of 250 to 600 g/m² is defined as cardboard, while materials above 600 g/m² are classified as paperboard.

For transport packaging, corrugated cardboard is mainly used, the basic characteristic of which is a multilayer structure. Between two flat layers of paper (the so-called liner) there is a corrugated layer of paper (fluting) that provides additional strength and protection. By combining different layers, material thicknesses of approximately 0.7 mm to 7 mm or more can be achieved, which enables the production of very robust transport packaging.

The key difference between the systems therefore lies in the type of material and the intended use: ECMA is used for folding carton boxes intended for selling products, while FEFCO is used for transport boxes made of corrugated cardboard that serve to protect products during transport and storage.

Fast production of high-quality, functional and attractive custom sales packaging!

At Demago Print, we offer custom folding carton packaging printing from as little as 10 pieces onward. Digital printing technology also allows the printing of different versions or graphic motifs within a single order, which means that packaging of the same dimensions can be printed with different designs. This approach is especially useful when testing the market or presenting different product lines.

Primary sales packaging (ECMA) is packaging that is in direct contact with the product and plays a key role in protecting, presenting and promoting the product. This type of packaging is often the first contact a consumer has with a product, which is why it plays an exceptionally important role in shaping the purchase decision.

Packaging has several functions:

  • protecting the product from external influences (moisture, dust, damage)
  • enabling easier transport and storage
  • providing product information
  • visual communication with the customer

Today, packaging is no longer just protection.

Because folding carton boxes offer a relatively large printable surface, they represent an exceptionally effective medium for brand presentation and product promotion.

Today, packaging products in appropriate packaging is considered completely self-evident. Folding carton boxes are therefore an indispensable element in the sale of many products.

Folding Box Board (FBB) or folding carton boxes are simple and inexpensive cardboard packaging that is stored folded flat, thereby saving space. Products are usually packed or inserted into the boxes manually, but can also be packed by machine.

Due to their versatile use and the possibility of producing different sizes and closure methods, they are actually used for packaging in all industry segments, whether in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, the textile industry, the food industry, packaging of electronic products, gifts, candles, jewelry, bottles (CBD, hemp oil...) and the list could go on.

Assembling cardboard packaging – practical example

Would you like the same packaging?

One-piece packaging with flaps, two-piece packaging and packaging for thin products

From the wide range of ECMA constructions available for different product packaging needs, cardboard packaging can basically be divided into one-piece packaging and two-piece packaging.

One-piece packaging is made from a single piece of cardboard that is formed into the final box by folding and gluing. Such packaging is very economical, easy to store and suitable for fast product packing.

The most commonly used one-piece packaging is folding boxes with flaps.

These can be divided into two basic groups according to the closing method:

Standard flap boxes (Straight line) – stable closing with top and bottom flaps.

Boxes with automatic bottom (Autolock bottom) have a self-closing mechanism on the bottom and allow very fast packaging assembly without additional gluing.

Two-piece packaging consists of two separate parts – usually a bottom part and a lid.

Among the best-known two-piece packaging types are pull-out or sliding boxes.

The inner part is simply pushed into the outer sleeve, which creates elegant and stable packaging.

A telescopic box with lid offers greater strength and protection due to its double wall.

A special packaging category also includes solutions for packing smaller and flat products.

Flat bags provide protection for documents, photographs or textiles without additional space.

Plug cases enable quick closing without glue.

Box sleeves improve the appearance of the packaging and additionally protect the product.

Greater brand recognition with the help of product labeling and promotional items!

Product labeling and promotion are key elements of modern marketing that help companies increase brand recognition, stimulate sales and build long-term relationships with customers. Successful promotion requires a clear understanding of the target audience and the thoughtful use of various communication tools.

Labels and product marking

Each type of labeling has its own specific advantages that need to be considered according to the type of product, target audience and the company’s sales goals. Well-designed packaging and additional promotional elements can significantly improve the appearance of a product and increase its market value.

An important part of product labeling is also self-adhesive roll labels, which enable clear product labeling with information about contents, composition, use or the brand.

POS materials and promotion

Wobblers or shelf wobblers are a very effective promotional element in retail. These are small cardboard tags attached to shelves or points of sale with the help of flexible plastic. Due to movement in even the slightest airflow, they quickly attract customer attention and increase product visibility.

Table stands are a practical promotional tool used in restaurants, at conferences, trade fairs or in business premises. They are intended for the presentation of information, promotions or table labeling.

Displays and additional elements

Cardboard stands (Table Cards) and displays are an economical and highly adaptable promotional solution that enables effective communication with visitors or customers. Such stands are often used on store shelves, at trade fairs, conferences or exhibitions, where they help emphasize important information or promotional offers.

Swing tags are small cardboard tags attached to products with string or ribbon. They usually contain product information such as price, size, material, instructions for use or the brand logo. In addition to an informative role, swing tags also have an important aesthetic function, as they complement the visual appearance of the product and help highlight brand identity. They are often used in the fashion industry, in the sale of jewelry, cosmetics, gift items and other products where it is important to create an attractive product presentation.

Would you like to improve the recognition of your products?

With the right combination of labels, wobblers, table stands, displays and additional promotional elements, you can give your product greater visibility, a better first impression and a stronger brand identity at the point of sale.

Materials and digital printing of primary folding packaging

For printing primary cardboard packaging, a special type of packaging board FBB (Folding Box Board) is used, which enables the production of high-quality, stable and visually attractive packaging. Such materials are especially suitable for packaging cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, food, luxury products and other goods where, in addition to functionality, aesthetic appearance is also important. Digital printing of such packaging enables fast production, flexibility and high print quality even in smaller and medium runs.

In recent years, due to environmental requirements and sustainability policies, more and more companies have decided to switch from plastic packaging to cardboard packaging. The European Parliament has restricted the use of single-use plastics through various legislative measures, which has encouraged many companies to adopt sustainable packaging solutions.

Cardboard materials have many advantages compared to plastic: - they are renewable - recyclable - biodegradable - suitable for composting. Due to these properties, the use of cardboard packaging is growing rapidly across many industries.

When choosing packaging board, it is important to consider several factors: - the purpose of the packaging - the weight of the product - the dimensions of the box - the target customer group. More information about materials and board properties can be found in the article: Packaging boards.

At Demago Print, we use GC1 type packaging board, which ensures high print quality, stability and suitability for contact with food.

Unlike traditional printing methods, digital packaging printing does not require expensive preparations such as printing plates or dies. That is why it is especially suitable for smaller and medium runs.

Did you know that only a small percentage of packaging products keep the same design for more than one year? Today, packaging is a key communication channel between the product and the customer.

Digital printing enables exceptional flexibility – each copy can be different, which means market testing, different designs and adjustments.

HP Indigo technology enables quality that in many cases exceeds offset printing, for runs from just a few pieces up to approximately 10,000 pcs.

With HP Indigo technology, we can print packaging at a resolution of up to 2438 × 2438 dpi, on materials up to B2+ format (530 × 750 mm) and thickness up to approximately 600 microns, at speeds of up to 4500 sheets per hour.

For packaging printing, we also use Low Migration inks, which are suitable for food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics and comply with all EU and FDA standards.

Packaging finishing and enhancement

Packaging finishing and enhancement include various processes carried out after printing that improve the functionality, durability and visual appearance of the packaging. With the help of these techniques, we can increase packaging resistance, improve its aesthetic impression and further increase the product’s attractiveness on the retail shelf.

To avoid possible damage to the printing ink, it is recommended to additionally protect printed packaging board. Two basic protection methods are available for packaging:

Protective varnishing or lamination with laminating film.

Varnishing is the process of applying a thin layer of transparent protective varnish to the surface of the printed material. Various types of varnish are available:

UV varnish – a varnish dried using UV light
AQ varnish – water-based varnish

With both technologies, it is possible to choose a matt or glossy (gloss) surface appearance.

Another protection option is lamination, where a protective film (approximately 25 microns) is applied to the printed material. Available: - matt film - gloss film - soft-touch film. Soft-touch film gives packaging a prestigious, velvety feel.

One of the most important stages of packaging production is die-cutting with a die-cutting tool (die), where the machine cuts out the desired packaging shapes.

This technology enables the production of complex constructions, openings, folds and other elements needed for functional packaging.

Advantages of classic die-cutting: - high productivity - fast production of larger runs - low unit costs

An alternative is digital CNC cutting, which enables packaging production without a tool. It is suitable for smaller runs, prototypes and test series.

After cutting, gluing and folding follow, where the packaging gets its final shape. At Demago Print, more than 1800 free die-cutting tool dimensions are available.

If you cannot find the required dimensions, you can order: - packaging design - prototype production - new tool production

You can order packaging design and prototype production here: Packaging design and prototype production

If you want to create prestigious and professional packaging that stands out from the competition, we offer various enhancement techniques at Demago Print.

One of the most popular methods is the printing of raised UV varnish (3D UV Spot), which enables highlighting of individual graphic elements. The technology allows the application of a thicker varnish layer on selected areas.

For additional visual effects, we also use digital metallic foil printing, which enables application without dies – faster and cost-effective in smaller runs.

For larger runs, hot foil printing is available, which ensures top precision and quality.

For additional raised effects, we also use emboss or deboss, which add a prestigious look to packaging and increase the perceived value of the product.

Would you like to add more protection and a premium look to your packaging?

With the right combination of protective coatings, die-cutting, gluing and enhancement, packaging can be tailored both functionally and visually to create a stronger impression at the point of sale.
