More than just printing: Protect your labels and bring your brand to life

In the world of packaging, where first impressions are everything, a label is never just a piece of information. It's a silent salesperson that stands out on the shelf, catches the eye, and subtly communicates your brand's story.

Because labels are exposed to mechanical damage, moisture, and external influences, we recommend choosing one of the available protection options. The only exception is structured design materials, where lamination with a protective film is not possible. In these cases, the natural texture of the paper stands out more, but the label is less protected as a result.

UV Varnishing – Protection and Visual Effect

UV varnishing is a process of applying a special varnish that, under the influence of UV light, creates a hard, durable surface layer. This layer protects the colors from rubbing and minor damage while also improving the label's appearance. In certain cases, UV varnish also offers protection against moisture and mild cleaning agents.

UV varnishing options:

  • Gloss UV Varnish: provides a high-gloss finish, more intense colors, and a prestigious look. It's often used for products where visual impact is key—for example, cosmetics, beverages, and luxury goods. In addition to its aesthetic effect, it also offers basic protection against rubbing and surface damage.
  • Matt TTR UV Varnish (Thermal Transfer Ribbon): a matte look with the possibility of subsequent overprinting with a thermal printer. This means you can later add serial numbers, expiration dates, QR codes, or other variable data to the labels, which is especially useful in the pharmaceutical, food, or product traceability industries.

UV varnishing is an excellent choice when you want to combine an aesthetic effect with functional protection against mechanical stress and, in some cases, moisture and mild cleaning agents.

 

Lamination – Plastic Coating for Maximum Protection

Lamination is the process of applying a thin, transparent, self-adhesive film using pressure (cold lamination). Lamination serves several roles: it protects the label from chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and greases, ensures resistance to mechanical damage, moisture, and UV light, and improves the mechanical strength and compactness of the label. Both classic lamination and TTR lamination are available.

Lamination options:

  • Gloss Lamination (PP): adds shine and accentuates colors, making the label look vibrant and bold. It's suitable for products where you want the label to immediately catch the eye (e.g., beverages, sweets, promotional items).
  • Matt Lamination (PP): creates an elegant, subdued look and reduces glare. An excellent choice for more sophisticated products or brands that want a subtle, minimalist image.
  • Soft-touch Lamination (PET): a special matte film that gives a velvety feel to the touch. This is a premium solution that combines a sophisticated look with a pleasant tactile experience. It is most commonly used for higher-priced products (e.g., perfumes, luxury packaging).

TTR Lamination (Thermal Transfer Ribbon) options:

  • Gloss TTR PP Lamination: a glossy protective layer that enhances color intensity and gives the label a lively, prestigious look. Because the film is designed for thermal overprinting, it allows for easy subsequent addition of variable data (e.g., dates, serial numbers, QR codes). It is suitable for products where both attractive presentation and traceability are important.
  • Matt TTR PP Lamination: a matte surface that creates a more elegant and understated look. It also allows for thermal overprinting, making it an excellent choice for industries that need a combination of protection, professional appearance, and additional data (e.g., pharmaceuticals, food products, technical items).

TTR lamination combines a dual advantage: reliable protection against moisture, mechanical damage, and external influences, and the possibility of subsequent personalized overprinting.

Differences Between Materials

Lamination film materials:

  • PP (Polypropylene): a more affordable choice, but less dimensionally stable—it starts to become unstable above 80–100 °C. Suitable for most standard applications.
  • PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): mechanically very durable and resistant to higher temperatures, making it suitable for more demanding applications. It offers longer durability and higher protection.
  • TTR (Thermal Transfer Ribbon): a special PP film that allows for subsequent overprinting with a thermal printer (serial numbers, dates, QR codes).

Lamination is the best choice for products that require long-lasting protection and a flawless look—from food in moist conditions to industrial products.

 

Trend 2025: Durability + Sophistication

The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) encourages the use of recyclable materials and designing packaging based on the "design for recycling" principle. In mass production, labels will therefore become increasingly environmentally friendly.

However, in the luxury segment (wines, perfumes, premium food, cosmetics), special finishes that offer sophistication and sensory effects remain at the forefront.
