At Demago Print, we offer a comprehensive service for printing on self-adhesive materials. Since we use a variety of materials, printing technologies, and finishing processes to create the final product, we would like to introduce these in a few sentences, so that you can quickly and easily choose the optimal solution for your next project based on what you read.Self-adhesive materials can be printed with different printing technologies, which can broadly be divided into digital and traditional methods. Although there are several variations within these two categories, we will focus only on liquid and dry toner technology, as well as inkjet technology. Each of these technologies has its own specific characteristics, so it's good to know at least a few basics before deciding on one or the other.DIGITAL PRINTERS FOR LABEL PRINTINGDigital printing technology has been around for over 30 years, but it has only been in the last decade that it has developed to a level where it can compete with traditional printing quality, and the newest digital technologies even surpass traditional printing in many ways. The key advantages of digital printing are speed, flexibility, and low setup costs, as expensive plates are not required, and file preparation work is simpler. It also allows for the printing of variable data. It's worth mentioning that the colors we use for printing are completely safe, which is confirmed by several certifications.Typically, labels are printed with Roll to Roll printers, where the roll width is limited to 33 cm, while large-format printers have a roll width of around 140 cm. The latter are used for printing larger labels (vinyl films), which are highly durable, UV-resistant, and suitable for both short-term and long-term applications (window displays, floor and wall decorations, glass surface decorations, vehicle wraps, etc.).At Demago Print, we have different machines for printing on self-adhesive materials. As mentioned earlier, each technology has its specific advantages and disadvantages. The most advanced in terms of print quality, color repeatability, and color accuracy is the HP Indigo technology (liquid toner), which allows printing on various self-adhesive materials, including transparent ones, since white ink is also available. This technology is ideal for small and medium print runs (from about 1000 labels or 10 linear meters of material), and as there is a market demand for high-quality small print runs, Demago Print is prepared for this need. With the installation of the Konica Minolta AccurioLabel printer (dry toner), which ensures excellent productivity, outstanding image quality, and cost-effective printing starting from just a few linear meters, we can print labels on rolls starting from 100 pieces. This technology allows CMYK color printing on opaque (white) PP and paper materials. When your needs involve only a few pieces of labels, we use Sheet-Fed printers, which allow printing on materials in sheets. An advantage of dry toner technology is its greater resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage compared to liquid toner, so all materials printed with dry toner must be protected with varnish or laminate.Let’s also mention large-format inkjet printing, which is ideal for printing larger label sizes that exceed A3 dimensions. These printers achieve resolutions of 600 to 900 dpi, which is sufficient for labels viewed from a greater distance.SELF-ADHESIVE MATERIALS AND TYPES OF ADHESIVESSelf-adhesive materials are basically made up of two layers: a backing (siliconized paper) and the top material with adhesive. In general, they can be divided into paper and synthetic materials. Paper materials can be uncoated, coated, thermal, metallized, structured, etc. We usually choose paper materials for printing when we need labels for bottles (structured papers for wine and beer, etc.), when we want eco-labels, when we want a premium metallic look for labels (metalized papers), or when we want labels to be printed with thermal printers. The second group consists of synthetic materials that are resistant to moisture and mild chemicals. The applications of synthetic materials are almost unlimited. Synthetic materials are divided into PP, PE, and PET materials. PP (polypropylene) is suitable for flat surfaces, PE (polyethylene) is suitable for flat and curved surfaces, and PET (polyester) is ideal for flat surfaces and is extremely resistant to atmospheric influences and very dimensionally stable. For most of these materials, there are various types of adhesives available. The most commonly used is the standard permanent adhesive, which provides good adhesion to most substrates. For rough surfaces, there is an Extra permanent adhesive – more difficult to remove, while for easier removability, there are removable and mild adhesives (Removable), and adhesives for frozen products, which are stored at very low temperatures (Deep-freeze). Of course, not all self-adhesive materials are available with every combination of adhesives! To ensure the label best suits its purpose, we need to know where it will be applied (material, surface structure, environmental conditions, desired label lifespan on the product...). For outdoor surfaces, we recommend synthetic materials with stronger adhesives, and for long-term UV exposure, dry toner technology is preferable. For labels exposed to cleaners, solvents, or oils, we suggest lamination... The most common adhesive choice is still classic permanent adhesive (+90%), which in our experience guarantees adhesion to almost all surfaces.LABEL FINISHINGOnce the label is printed, it can be optionally protected with varnish or laminate in matte or glossy finish, enhanced with metallized foil (thermal printing), embossing, spot UV coating, etc. An essential part of finishing is die-cutting the labels to the exact dimensions or shape. We offer two methods of label die-cutting: classic die-cutting with a die and CNC cutting along the contour line.Classic die-cutting is chosen for medium to large print runs. Due to the machine length, which requires a minimum roll length of 10 linear meters, it is practically impossible or unprofitable to die-cut smaller quantities of labels. The advantage of classic die-cutting is also the speed of die-cutting and the possibility of varnishing and lamination. Our die-cutting toolset includes over 800 free die tools. If the required dimensions are not available, we can adjust your size to our available dimensions, or we can create a new die tool, which starts at €100+VAT.If you don't need a large quantity of labels, we offer CNC cutting, where we don't need a die tool but cut the material using two cutting blades mounted in the cutting head, which is computer-controlled and detects markers using an optical camera. The cutting speed is up to 5 m/min, which is much slower than classic die-cutting, where the machine speed is over 80 m/min, but as mentioned, this method is a great and cost-effective alternative for smaller print runs.CONCLUSIONBased on the description of the printing technologies and various finishing options for self-adhesive labels available, the first three basic questions need to be answered: where will I apply the label, how will I apply it, and how many labels do I need? Once you have answers to these questions, you can choose one of the available options, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the combination of technologies.Labels on Roll CNC Cut - Advantages:∗ Cost-effective printing starting from 100 pieces;∗ Excellent print quality;∗ Printing on paper and synthetic materials;∗ Dry toner printing is highly resistant to scratches, no need for varnishing or lamination;∗ CNC cutting for custom dimensions and shapes (no die tool cost);∗ Short production times.Labels on Roll CNC Cut - Disadvantages:∗ Dry toner technology doesn't allow printing with white ink, so transparent and metallized materials cannot be used;∗ Cutting speed is not suitable for quantities over approximately 2500 pieces;∗ Labels are suitable for manual application (supplied on rolls with a width of 33 cm).Check the price of printing Labels on Roll CNC CutLabels on Roll DIE Cut - Advantages:∗ Cost-effective printing starting from approximately 1000 pieces;∗ Top-quality print and color consistency;∗ Ability to print with white ink;∗ Printing on paper, synthetic, metallized, and transparent materials;∗ Wide selection of adhesives;∗ Cutting speed is suitable for high volumes;∗ Labels suitable for machine application;∗ Possibility of cross-cutting, rewinding to custom widths and lengths of rolls;∗ Possibility of varnishing, lamination, UV spot coating, thermal and embossing.Labels on Roll DIE Cut - Disadvantages:∗ Printer and finishing equipment require a minimum roll length of 10 meters;∗ Small print runs are not cost-effective;∗ Labels printed with liquid toner must always be protected with varnish or laminate;∗ If the size you need is not available, tool creation costs start at €100;∗ Longer production times.Dejan F.
