Self-adhesive roll labels – a professional solution for industrial product labeling

Self-adhesive roll labels represent the standard of modern product labeling in the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, logistics and industrial sectors. They provide high-resolution printing, precise die-cutting, optimal material adaptability and efficient manual or automated application. Whether you need small batches or larger production runs, digital label printing offers flexibility, fast production and cost efficiency without tooling costs when using CNC cutting.

Self-adhesive labels are a key element of product visual identity and regulatory compliance. They are used for product labeling, identification, traceability and promotion in a wide range of industrial environments.

Label materials have adhesive applied on the reverse side, allowing permanent or temporary bonding to different surfaces such as glass, plastic, metal, cardboard or other packaging materials.

Labels are typically printed with text, graphics, logos and identification elements (EAN codes, QR codes, serial numbers), enabling clear communication of essential product information and compliance with regulatory requirements.

In practice, the terms label and sticker are often used interchangeably, but in industrial production the difference mainly lies in the intended application, printing technology and material type.

Stickers designed for decorative or promotional applications (vehicles, shop windows, outdoor advertising) are usually produced using large-format technologies such as UV, Latex or Solvent printing. In contrast, self-adhesive roll labels are optimized for precise printing of smaller formats and industrial labeling applications.

Due to the smaller dimensions of labels, the use of high-resolution printing technology is essential to ensure sharp small text, accurate color transitions and consistent print quality across production runs.

At Demago Print we offer both label printing and self-adhesive sticker printing using modern digital technology and certified self-adhesive materials that guarantee premium print quality (HP Indigo).

Printing is performed from sheets sized 500 × 700 mm (Cut-sheet) or from rolls with a width of 33 cm and a length of up to 2000 m (Roll-to-Roll system).

The choice of printing technology directly affects the final product. Material printed from sheets is usually delivered as labels on sheets, while material printed from rolls is delivered as labels on rolls – optimized for manual or automated application.

Since labels are used in various industrial applications, the correct specification should take into account:

– product purpose
– type of packaging
– storage conditions (humidity, temperature, UV exposure)
– label lifespan
– regulatory requirements
– application method (manual or automated)

We understand that choosing the right material, adhesive and production technology is not always simple. For this reason, we have prepared an overview of key characteristics and professional guidelines to help you select the optimal solution for your project.

Adhesives – selection based on application conditions

Various types of adhesives are available: permanent adhesive, strong (hot melt) adhesive, removable adhesive and adhesives for demanding environments.
Choosing the correct adhesive is essential for label durability on different surfaces and temperatures.

Adhesives for label materials differ in their characteristics and properties and should be selected based on the label material, the surface where the label will be applied and the application environment.

The adhesive type used for self-adhesive label materials plays a crucial role as it affects bonding strength, durability and suitability for specific applications.

The base material is coated with adhesive selected according to the substrate where the label will be applied and the environmental conditions during application, storage and product use.

If the wrong adhesive is selected, labels may curl, detach from the surface or become impossible to remove when required.

Types of label adhesives
Types of adhesives and applications:

• Permanent adhesive: the most common choice for roll labels. Suitable for glass, plastic, metal and cardboard. Resistant to moisture and temperature changes.

• Hot melt / extra permanent adhesive: very strong initial adhesion. Ideal for rough or uneven surfaces and demanding industrial applications.

• Removable adhesive: suitable for temporary labels and promotional campaigns. Allows removal without adhesive residue.

• Deep-freeze adhesive: special adhesive designed for frozen products (down to -10°C). Suitable for the food industry and cold-chain logistics.

• Cover-up adhesive
opaque black or grey adhesive used to cover existing information or printing errors on packaging.

How to choose the right material for roll labels?

The choice of label material is crucial for durability, appearance and functionality. The correct decision mainly depends on how and where the product will be used.

For food and beverages
For products exposed to moisture or refrigeration (bottles, cans, juices), we recommend PP or PET materials because they are resistant to condensation and low temperatures.

For cosmetics and personal care products
For softer packaging such as tubes or plastic bottles, PE material is the best choice because it adapts to the surface and prevents label wrinkling.

For industrial products
When high mechanical or chemical resistance is required, PET material provides excellent durability and long service life.
For a premium appearance
For wine labels or luxury products we recommend design or metallized papers which enhance the premium look of the product.

For temporary or promotional campaigns
Paper materials provide a cost-effective solution for short-term marketing campaigns.

Roll labels for different industries

Self adhesive roll labels are used in many industries – from food and cosmetics to pharmaceuticals, logistics and industrial production. Choosing the right material, adhesive and label shape depends on the product, packaging and usage conditions (humidity, temperature, food contact or mechanical stress).

Labels for beverages
Labels for bottles, cans, juices, mineral water and energy drinks must withstand moisture, condensation and refrigeration. For these products we recommend PP or PET materials with permanent adhesives that ensure reliable adhesion even in cold environments.

Labels for jars
Jams, honey, sauces and compotes often use paper or synthetic labels that highlight the natural look of the product. Labels must ensure clear readability of information and durability during storage or transport.

Labels for food products
Labels for dairy products, dry foods or sweets must meet regulatory requirements while also highlighting the brand on store shelves. Choosing materials suitable for food contact and refrigeration conditions is essential.

Labels for cosmetics
Cosmetic products require labels resistant to moisture, oils and mechanical stress. PP or PE materials are commonly used because they adapt well to curved packaging surfaces such as tubes, bottles or containers.

Labels for vape products
Labels for electronic cigarettes and e-liquids must ensure compliance with regulations (TPD) while also maintaining an attractive design. Materials should be resistant to liquids and mechanical stress.

Safety labels
Industrial safety labels are used to warn about hazards, mark equipment or chemicals and ensure a safe working environment. They are often made from durable PET materials with very strong adhesives.

Label die-cutting – CNC cutting or traditional die-cut?

Roll labels can be cut using traditional die-cut tooling or digital CNC cutting without the need for a cutting tool. The choice mainly depends on quantity, shape and cost optimization.

Label die-cutting is an essential finishing process that defines the final shape and dimensions of the label and separates it from the backing material.

Labels are most commonly produced in standard shapes such as rectangles or circles, but they can also be produced in completely custom shapes.

Traditional label die-cutting (Die-Cut) is performed on a rotary die-cutting machine using a cutting tool or magnetic die that presses into the self-adhesive material and cuts the final label shape.

The process is followed by removing the excess material (matrix), slitting and rewinding the labels onto rolls of the required width.

Because the finishing equipment is modular, labels can also be varnished or laminated.

The main advantage of die-cut tooling is production speed, which makes this method ideal for quantities of at least 500 pieces.

Digital label cutting (CNC Cut)

Digital label cutting
Digital label cutting (CNC Cut) is a digital finishing process where no physical die-cutting tool is required.

The labels are cut using precision blades mounted in computer-controlled cutting heads. An optical camera detects printed markers and guides the cutting process with extremely high accuracy.

After cutting, the excess material (matrix) is removed, the labels are slit and rewound onto rolls of the required width.

Because the system is modular, labels can also be laminated as part of the finishing process.

The main advantage of digital cutting technology is the ability to produce any shape or dimension without the need to manufacture a die-cutting tool, which means that the tooling cost is eliminated.

Compared to traditional die-cutting, this finishing method is slower and therefore most suitable for quantities between 100 and 5000 pieces.

Manual or automatic label application

Roll labels are suitable for manual application, semi-automatic application and fully automatic labeling systems.
For machine application it is important to define the correct roll orientation, core diameter and winding direction.

Roll labels are an important element of industrial product labeling and are widely used for product identification, packaging and other applications where automated and continuous labeling is required.

Since labels are supplied on long rolls, they ensure uninterrupted operation and reliable supply for labeling machines.

Automatic label application is commonly used in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics production, packaging industry, logistics and many other sectors.

The advantages of automatic labeling include:

• increased production efficiency • higher application accuracy • faster processing of large product volumes

This is especially important in high-capacity production environments where manual labeling would be inefficient or impractical.

When using automatic labeling systems, the following technical parameters should be considered:

label position on the roll label orientation (A1 – A8) core diameter (25 mm, 40 mm or 76 mm) maximum outer roll diameter number of labels per roll gap between labels

For manual label application, these parameters are not critical because the labels are applied without machines.

Labels for manual application can be delivered:

• on rolls • on rolls with a width of 33 cm (Roll to Roll) • on sheets approximately 30 × 33 cm (Roll to Sheet)
