Demago – the First W2P in the Region Given the theme of this issue of Print Magazine, we visited the Demago printing company in Slovenia, whose operations date back to 2008 when they started with business cards and flyers. Since then, they have continuously expanded their product range, and we can confidently say that they are one of the largest web-to-print printers in the Adria/Balkan region. Since our last visit to Demago, we’ve noticed drastic changes. The company has moved into a new building in the business zone at the entrance to Maribor. The modern facility was built to enable the implementation of the latest technology and automated printing processes. The ground floor of the building is equipped with the latest Durst, Zund, Ricoh, and HP machines for wide-format production. The first floor is the central part of the building where purchasing, sales, client communication, software development, and marketing take place. This is the heart of production and the philosophy behind the web-to-print business model, which has elevated Demago above the competition. The second floor houses sheetfed production. It is based on several high-production Ricoh printers with inline finishing. While this kind of setup slows down Ricoh’s printing unit, which has high production speeds, inline finishing minimizes the need for manual labor and reduces the risk of human error. The host and owner of Demago, Mr. Dejan Fajfar, is our interviewee for this article. How did you get into web-to-print, considering you don't come from the graphics industry? In my younger years, I was very active in the field of photographic reproduction. That’s how I got involved with large-format Epson printers used to reproduce artistic photographs. This was my introduction to digital printing, Photoshop, and creating ICC profiles. However, my real entry into the graphics industry happened in 2008. One afternoon, I urgently needed business cards, and I couldn’t find a single print shop in Maribor where I could get them made. So I went to the store, bought a printer, and made the first cards myself. That’s when the idea for express production of graphic products began. What software do you use in your business? We began developing our web-to-print business 12 years ago in Slovenia. In the early years, we focused on SRA3 sheet-based products. The reason was the software complexity. Implementing products into the software is extremely demanding and time-consuming. Over the past 12 years, we’ve worked on the software for at least 5 hours every day—adding new items, but also constantly improving the user experience for easier online ordering. The current version of the software and the one from 12 years ago have almost nothing in common. The software is the most important part of Demago. Can you briefly present your product range? We started with SRA3 formats, and after a few years, we added products printed on the HP Latex printer, introducing us to large-format printing. Today, our product portfolio includes a wide range—from business cards, flyers, banners, labels, books, desk flags, calendars, envelopes, catalogs, magazines, and other publications to CD and DVD covers. For large-format products, we focus on tarpaulins, canvas, paper, mesh, stickers, and offer a wide selection. A few years ago, we also started with rigid board materials. In our production, we have Ricoh and Durst large-format flatbed printers, and we finish them on a Zund CNC machine for rigid media. Besides rigid materials, we also produce personalized cardboard packaging. These are new products we plan to expand in the coming years, with a focus on small-run, personalized carton packaging tailored to customer needs. Another development area is the production of short-run books. For this purpose, we installed a new thread-sewing line, and we are currently installing a new HP Indigo 10000 B2-format printer. This will allow us to expand our offering beyond SRA3 formats and increase our capacity. I should also mention our promotional products such as various displays, stands, brochures, roll-ups, and desk advertising accessories. What are Demago’s advantages over the competition? Our goal is to satisfy every customer by offering as many new products as possible in one place, saving them time and money. We are constantly developing and searching for new ideas to offer to our customers. We strive to ensure that all our clients have the same conditions and that we treat everyone professionally and fairly. We are proud of our product quality, which we aim to further improve with the new machine. Technology changes rapidly, and we must keep up with trends. We don’t think about when a new machine will pay off—because without investment, there is no progress. Workflow optimization is crucial, starting from the moment of order and ending with delivery. Given today’s fast pace and time shortage, we’re quick in quotations, printing, and delivery—never at the expense of quality. Customer satisfaction is our main focus. Sometimes a customer makes a complaint. Often, it's due to their mistake. Still, we produce and deliver a new product at our own expense to maintain customer satisfaction. Success in the market requires mutual respect—toward customers, partners, and suppliers. We are always open to improvements. We’re driven by a passion for print, ambition, dedication, and always giving our best. We aim to integrate environmentally friendly materials and technologies into our processes. I believe that with this approach, success is inevitable. Print Magazin
