06.09.2016 A business card is not just a list of contacts …

... but it’s much more than that. In a way, it’s an advertisement representing you and your company. It either makes a great impression on your business partner — or none at all. Many don’t give their business cards much thought, thinking they’re just a piece of paper with contact details that often ends up in the bin. What they don’t realize is that they end up there precisely because they’re unattractive, bland, and unclear.

Make smart use of limited space
Standard business card sizes are 85x54mm and 90x50mm. Space is limited, but it must be used wisely. A small card is no excuse for illegible content. On the other hand, business cards with every single millimeter filled up are also not ideal.

Important information should stand out — through color, font size, or “special effects” (more on that later). We also recommend using both sides of the business card. Leaving the back blank or just placing your logo on it is a missed opportunity.

Why not use that space to list reasons why a client should choose you, call you, what you offer, and what they gain by working with you?

The choice of paper matters
Alongside good design and content, choosing the right paper is essential. Cards printed on thinner stock — 250g or 300g — often look cheap. This can ruin the effect of even the best design and message.

We recommend using 350g/m² or 400g/m² paper, either coated, uncoated, or 100% recycled. The ideal paper choice depends on your company’s branding and the industry you work in. Using higher-quality and thicker paper also extends the lifespan of your cards.

“Special Effects”
Why not take advantage of the many special finishes offered by modern printing techniques?

We’re talking about post-printing processes such as spot UV, lamination, embossing, foil stamping, and rounded corners.

Let’s briefly go over what each of these offers. These techniques are not mutually exclusive — you can combine them. Just be careful not to go overboard and end up with a cluttered design.

Lamination – In addition to protection, matte, gloss, and soft-touch laminations also add a premium feel. If you want to be “on-trend,” go with soft-touch lamination — it’s becoming increasingly popular for its velvety, elegant feel.

Embossing/Debossing – Your logo, graphic element, or slogan can be raised or pressed into the card. It’s a tactile way to stand out.

Foil Stamping – Logos, slogans, or even contact details can be finished with metallic foil. Gold and silver foils are the most common options.

Spot UV Coating – Works beautifully with soft-touch lamination. It adds a glossy highlight, typically to a logo or graphic, making it pop.

Rounded Corners – You can round all four corners, just two on one side, or two diagonally — it depends on your design.

Stand out with a Multiloft Business Card
This technique uses a special 320g paper on each side, pressed around a 270g colored core. You can even add two cores for extra thickness.

The possibilities are endless. Take advantage of them and stand out from the crowd: Business Cards
