04.09.2016 Send an inquiry for printing – Ah, a piece of cake

Ah, in practice, things are often not that simple. Even though it may seem like putting together an inquiry is an easy task, it often turns out not to be the case—especially when it comes to inquiries for more complex printed materials (books, brochures, proceedings, labels, etc.).

Every piece of information that the inquiry must contain is equally important, as they are all interconnected. Providing all the necessary details helps you avoid potential issues and saves time.

1. Type of printed product
Define in the inquiry whether it is a flyer, leaflet, catalog, proceedings, brochure, etc. For example, if you state that it's an A4 flyer, it’s assumed that 2 A4 pages will be printed. A leaflet, on the other hand, might consist of 4, 6, or even 8 pages.

2. Page count
Your printed material can have any number of pages. However, there are certain recommendations that are useful to follow due to the printing method.

One of the key ones applies to wire-stitched products (catalogs), where the total page count must be divisible by 4. If you’re planning a 34-page booklet and want it wire-stitched, one option is to add 2 blank pages, or opt for spiral binding instead.

For products with 40 to 700 pages, softcover (perfect binding) or hardcover (case binding) are the most suitable options. Wire-stitching is suitable for up to 100 pages, while spiral binding works for up to 120 sheets.

3. Printing type and method
There’s digital printing, ideal for smaller quantities, and traditional offset printing, which is more cost-effective for larger quantities. Digital printing is more flexible for printing different variants of the same item and is typically faster. So first, decide which printing type fits your desired quantity.

Another important detail is the method of printing: single-sided or double-sided, color or black-and-white, etc.

International printing terminology includes:

1/0 – single-sided black-and-white
1/1 – double-sided black-and-white
4/0 – single-sided color
4/4 – double-sided color
4/1 – color on one side and black-and-white on the other

Pantone color printing is not possible in digital technique. It is only available in offset printing, which uses additional designations such as:

2/0 – printing with 2 Pantone colors
3/0 – printing with 3 Pantone colors
5/0 – printing with 4 process colors (CMYK) + 1 Pantone

4. Paper
There is a wide range of paper types. In the inquiry, it is helpful to specify both the weight (gsm) and the type of paper. For example, whether you want coated, uncoated, recycled, or creative paper. Both factors affect the final price. If your requirements—especially regarding paper weight—are not optimal, we will prepare an offer with a more suitable paper option for your print product.

5. Format
Print materials are most commonly produced in standard formats such as A5, A4, A3, A6, B2, B3, etc. However, many customers wish to stand out with a unique format to capture attention. In digital print, we can produce flyers, leaflets, calendars, and spiral-bound items up to 680×315 mm, and posters up to 1500 mm wide. Always indicate both the open and closed dimensions for folded materials.

6. Quantity
You may have included all the above elements in your inquiry but forgot to mention the quantity. In this case, it's impossible to prepare an offer, as the print run is crucial. There's a big difference between 1,000 and 10,000 flyers. The first would be more suitable for digital printing, the latter for offset.

7. Finishing
Trimming, folding, creasing, collating, perforation, die-cutting, hole punching, lamination (matte, gloss, soft-touch, anti-scratch), attaching wobblers, applying labels to brochures, wire-stitching, spiral binding, soft or hard binding, clear dry ink, spot UV coating, blind embossing.

There are many finishing options. Some are standard, like trimming or folding for leaflets, while other specific requirements should be clearly stated in the inquiry.

Different finishing methods vary in price and production time.
