Types of publication binding

Choosing the right binding is crucial for the final appearance, usability and lifetime of the publication. Below are the most common bookbinding methods we use for printing catalogs, brochures, books and other publications.

Saddle stitching

Saddle stitching is one of the most common bindings for catalogs, brochures and smaller publications. It enables fast production, precise trimming and economical manufacturing even in smaller quantities.

It is suitable for publications with a lower page count, where low cost, fast turnaround and a clear presentation of content are important. It is often used for catalogs, promotional brochures, magazines, programs and other printed materials where practicality and a good balance between price and quality are essential.

Perfect binding

Perfect binding (glued or thread-sewn) is an excellent choice for more extensive publications. It ensures a professional appearance, good durability and wide usability.

It is suitable for catalogs, brochures, manuals and other printed materials with a higher page count. This type of binding creates a more serious and refined look, which makes it highly suitable for presentation materials, professional content, sales catalogs and printed products that need to look more professional and long-lasting.

Spiral binding

Spiral binding allows full opening (360°) and easy use. It is ideal for proceedings, workbooks, manuals and presentation materials.

It is available with a soft or hard cover, depending on the desired durability and intended use. The main advantage of spiral binding is functionality, as it allows comfortable page turning and practical desk use, making it especially suitable for publications intended for frequent use, writing, learning or everyday work.

Hardcover binding

Hardcover binding is the highest-quality and most prestigious type of binding. It provides maximum protection and a long publication lifetime.

It is suitable for books, monographs, luxury catalogs and representative printed materials. This type of finish is intended for projects where, in addition to the content, the impression of prestige, durability and quality is very important. Hardcover binding is an excellent choice for publications that need to look valuable, professional and suitable for long-term use.

Alternative bindings

In addition to classic bindings, we also offer special solutions such as screw binding or rivet binding. These allow full opening of the publication and easy replacement or addition of pages.

They are suitable for technical manuals, sample books, material catalogs and other specific projects where classic bookbinding methods are not the most appropriate choice. Such solutions offer greater flexibility, easier handling and a more technical or presentation-focused way of use.

If you are preparing a special project and need a different binding method, it makes sense to check the most suitable solution already at the initial stage based on block thickness, intended use and page-turning style.

How to decide which binding to choose?

Choosing the right binding mainly depends on the page count of the publication, the way it will be used and the desired durability of the product. Different bookbinding methods provide an optimal solution for catalogs, brochures, books, manuals or proceedings.

1. Page count – the basic criterion

The most important factor when choosing a binding is the number of sheets or the number of pages in the book block. If the publication has fewer than 24 pages, the most common choices are spiral binding or saddle stitching.

With spiral binding, we can bind from as few as two sheets or four pages onward, while saddle stitching allows binding from eight pages onward.

For publications with 8–80 pages, these are most often economical and quickly produced printed materials where the balance between price, quality and speed of production is important.

When the book block exceeds around 80 pages or a spine thickness of around 4 mm, saddle stitching is no longer suitable. In such cases, perfect binding or hardcover binding is used.

2. Layout and format

For publications such as catalogs, brochures or books, format also plays an important role. The right format affects content clarity, presentation style and the overall visual impression.

The most commonly used is the portrait format, which provides a clear and readable text structure.

Landscape format is an excellent choice for photographs and wider visual presentations, while the square format stands out with a modern and slightly more premium appearance.

The same logic also applies to books – portrait format for text, landscape for visual projects, and square format for creative and design publications.

3. Paper selection

When choosing a publication, not only the binding matters but also the type of paper, because it strongly influences the appearance, the feel in hand and the final purpose of the printed product.

Coated papers provide more vivid colors, stronger contrast and a smooth surface, making them ideal for catalogs and photographs. Uncoated papers feel more natural and elegant and are often chosen for text-based publications.

Also increasingly popular are eco papers, made from recycled materials, and design (creative) papers, which add a special character to the publication through their texture, tone or bulk.

The right paper choice has a major impact on how the publication will perform in practice – both visually and functionally.

4. Durability and intended use

The final decision also depends on how often the publication will be used. If the printed product is intended for occasional use, perfect binding with milling and gluing is usually sufficient.

If, however, the publication will be used or opened frequently, we recommend thread sewing of the book block, as it ensures significantly greater durability.

For prestigious or long-term projects such as books, monographs or luxury catalogs, the best choice is hardcover binding, which offers maximum protection and a premium final appearance.

In the end, you also choose the type of cover – soft card cover or hard board cover – depending on the intended use, durability and desired visual effect.

Not sure which binding is right for your project?

Based on the number of pages, intended use and desired appearance of the publication, you can quickly choose the optimal solution – from simple catalogs to prestigious books.

Catalog printing – the most popular binding is saddle stitching

In catalog printing, saddle stitching is one of the most common choices, as it enables fast production, a neat appearance and a good balance between price and quality. It is suitable for small and medium-sized catalogs, promotional brochures, magazines and other publications where clarity and practicality matter.

Saddle stitching

It is a bookbinding process in which a machine uses metal wire to connect several sheets and staple them at the spine with two staples. The publication is then folded in half and trimmed to the final format. This is how catalogs, booklets, notebooks or smaller brochures are produced.

This type of binding is suitable for publications with a page count ranging from 8 to around 80 pages, or 4 to 20 sheets. Catalogs with fewer pages are usually printed on lighter papers, while for higher page counts we recommend a thicker cover, often additionally protected with lamination film.

The total number of pages for this type of publication must always be divisible by 4 (16, 20, 24, 28 pages …).

Catalogs are available in different standard formats. They are most commonly printed in full color, but they can also be printed in black and white. To make ordering easier, they are divided into several categories according to paper type, cover finishing and final visual effect.

Printing catalogs, brochures and other publications is essential for a professional presentation of your offer. A high-quality catalog provides a clear content structure, better product overview and a strong visual impression that influences the customer’s decision. The right choice of paper, format and binding therefore makes an important contribution to the success of sales and presentation materials.

Softcover brochures – milled and glued for a professional look

In brochure printing, perfect binding with milling and gluing is one of the most common choices, as it ensures a professional appearance, good durability and economical production even with a higher page count. It is suitable for presentation brochures, catalogs, manuals, annual reports and other more extensive publications where a neat binding and a quality final impression are important.

Perfect binding for brochures – milling and gluing the book block

Perfect binding – milled and glued

Perfect binding is a process in which the machine first mills the spine of the book block, then applies hot glue (Hotmelt) and glues the book block into the cover. At the same time, the cover is creased and glued to the book block, which ensures a solid, clean and aesthetically pleasing binding.

This binding method allows the production of publications ranging from approximately 40 to 800 pages, or up to a maximum spine thickness of around 60 mm. This makes perfect binding an excellent choice for brochures, catalogs, manuals and other more extensive printed materials where a professional appearance is important.

We print brochures in full color or black and white, and a black-and-white Hi-res (BW) print option is also available, suitable for publications with many photographs or more demanding graphic elements.

A brochure consists of two basic parts: the book block and the cover. The book block is usually printed on lighter papers with grammages from around 90 to 130 g/m², while the cover is printed on a heavier board of around 300 g/m², which is additionally protected on the outside with lamination film.

Different portrait formats, landscape formats and square formats are available and can be adapted according to the purpose, content and intended use of the brochure.

Printing brochures, catalogs and other publications with perfect binding is therefore one of the most popular solutions for the professional presentation of content. A high-quality brochure provides a clear content structure, better information overview and a strong visual impression that influences the customer’s decision. The right choice of paper, format and binding therefore significantly contributes to the success of sales, presentation and educational materials.

Softcover brochures – thread-sewn for greater durability

In brochure printing, thread-sewn softcover binding is one of the most durable solutions, as it ensures a professional appearance, very good strength and a long publication lifetime. It is suitable for brochures, manuals, workbooks, professional books, catalogs and other more extensive publications that are frequently used.

Softcover binding – thread-sewn

The main advantage of thread-sewn binding is durability and the long lifetime of the publication. With this type of binding, individual pages cannot fall out, which makes it suitable for products that are frequently opened and used. Such publications include workbooks, cookbooks, manuals, art books and other more extensive brochures.

With this type of binding, the printed sheets are first machine-folded in half and then sewn together with thread. Usually, signatures of four sheets or 16 pages are connected together, although fewer are also possible. The folded signatures are then assembled in the correct order and sewn together at the spine to create the book block.

The book block is then glued into a cover made of thicker material, and the final step is trimming to the finished format. This type of binding is suitable for publications from around 32 to approximately 800 pages, with the spine thickness of the book block not exceeding about 50 mm. The total number of pages must always be divisible by 4.

Thread-sewn brochures are printed in standard formats, in full color or black and white. A black-and-white Hi-res (BW) print option is also available, suitable for publications with many photographs or more demanding graphics. In the online print shop Demago Print, you can order brochure printing from as little as 10 copies onward.

Different portrait formats, landscape formats and square formats are available, allowing optimal adaptation according to the type of content.

Printing brochures, catalogs and other publications with thread-sewn softcover binding is an excellent choice for all projects where durability matters in addition to a clean appearance. This type of finish is especially suitable for publications that users frequently browse, open and use over a longer period of time.

Hardcover books – the most prestigious and durable choice

In book printing, hardcover binding is the highest-quality and most prestigious form of bookbinding. It is suitable for long-lasting book editions, representative publications, monographs, gift books and other printed materials where, in addition to the content, durability, protection and a premium final impression are important.

Hardcover book binding

Hardcover binding – the queen of bindings

Hardcover binding is used for more durable and prestigious book editions. The cover is made of hard board, which protects the inside pages significantly better than a soft cover and allows long-term use.

It is a more demanding bookbinding method, as the production process consists of several technological steps, which also affects production time and product price. Precisely for this reason, hardcover binding is the right choice for projects where you want to achieve a higher level of quality, a representative appearance and long-term durability.

A hardcover book consists of the cover and the book block. The book block is thread-sewn and then additionally reinforced at the spine with gauze. This ensures very good strength and stability even in more extensive books.

The cover is made of hard board approximately 2.5 mm thick, onto which a printed covering material is mounted, usually 170 g/m² coated paper laminated on one side. Unlike perfect binding, the book block in hardcover binding is inserted into the cover using endpapers, which allows the book to open better and ensures higher-quality use.

The spine of the book can be flat or rounded. Additional options such as headbands, bookmark ribbon or protective packaging are also available. This binding is suitable for publications from around 24 to 800 pages, with the book block spine thickness not exceeding around 60 mm.

We print hardcover books in standard formats, usually in full color, but also in black and white, from as few as 10 copies onward. Hardcover binding is therefore an excellent choice for books, monographs, anniversary editions, luxury catalogs and other representative publications.

Printing books, publications and other premium printed materials in hardcover binding is intended for projects where you want to combine quality content, long lifetime and a premium visual impression. This type of finish gives the book greater value, better protection and a distinctly professional appearance.

Spiral-bound proceedings – maximum functionality and easy use

Spiral binding, also known as Wire-O binding, is a practical solution for publications where full opening, easy page turning and content clarity are essential. It is an ideal choice for proceedings, manuals, working materials, reports and other documents that need to remain functional even with frequent use.

Spiral binding – Wire-O

Spiral binding, often also called Wire-O binding, is a simple and fast way of binding publications. In this process, the book block is perforated along the edge, and a metal wire spiral is inserted through the holes, connecting all sheets into a strong and functional product.

The greatest advantage of spiral binding is the ability to open the publication 360°, which allows it to lie completely flat. This is especially useful for proceedings, notebooks, workbooks, reports, manuals and other documents where easy page turning and good content visibility are important.

Spiral binding is suitable for publications from around 4 to 240 pages (2 to 120 sheets), with the spine thickness not exceeding around 22 mm. For this reason, it is very suitable for small and medium-sized publications that need to remain practical and durable.

We print proceedings in standard formats, in full color or black and white. A black-and-white Hi-res (BW) option is also available and is especially suitable for publications with many photographs or more demanding graphic elements.

At the online print shop Demago Print, you can order proceedings printing from as little as 1 copy onward, which enables very flexible production even for smaller projects, internal presentations, seminars or test runs.

Printing proceedings, manuals and other documents with spiral binding is ideal for everyday use, as it allows full opening, practicality and a long lifetime even under intensive use. This type of finish is an excellent choice for content that needs to be clear, functional and professionally presented.

Spiral binding with hard cover – maximum protection and functionality

Spiral binding with a hard cover combines full opening (360°), characteristic of Wire-O binding, with the durability of a hard bookbinding cover. It is an ideal solution for planners, manuals, presentation materials and other publications that need to withstand intensive use.

Spiral binding with hard cover

Wire-O binding with hard cover

If you need a more durable and professional product, spiral binding with a hard cover is an excellent choice. The hard board cover effectively protects the inside pages and significantly extends the lifetime of the publication, while maintaining the practicality of spiral opening.

The cover is made of hard board approximately 2.5 mm thick, onto which a printed covering material is mounted (most often 170 g/m² coated paper), laminated on one side. This finish ensures high resistance to wear and a prestigious appearance.

The inner side of the cover is additionally lined with protective paper, which can be unprinted or printed on request. The size of the cover is usually about 5 mm larger than the inner format, which provides additional protection for the page edges.

Spiral binding with a hard cover is suitable for publications from around 20 to 240 pages, with the spine thickness not exceeding around 22 mm. Due to its combination of strength and flexibility, it is ideal for planners, manuals, technical documentation and presentation materials.

We print planners and other publications in standard formats, mostly in full color, while black-and-white Hi-res (BW) printing is also available for more demanding content.

Different portrait formats, landscape formats and square formats are available, enabling full adaptation according to the intended use and visual effect of the publication.

Frequently asked questions about catalog, brochure and book printing

How many pages should a catalog have?

For most publications, the total number of pages must always be divisible by 4 (for example 16, 20, 24, 28 pages), because printed materials are produced from folded printing sheets. If the page count is not correct, blank pages need to be added or the layout has to be adjusted.

What is the difference between a catalog, a brochure and a book?

Catalogs are intended for presenting products or services and often contain photographs and offer descriptions. Brochures are usually informative or promotional publications with a higher page count (40-800). Books are more extensive and more durable publications, where the cover is made of hard board – hardcover binding.

Which binding should I choose for publication printing?

For smaller publications of up to around 60 pages, saddle stitching is the most suitable choice. For more extensive publications, perfect binding is used (milled and glued or thread-sewn), while hardcover binding is used for prestigious editions.

What is the minimum quantity for publication printing?

At the online print shop Demago Print, you can order most publications from as little as 1 copy onward. Digital printing enables economical production even for smaller runs of catalogs, brochures or books.

How long does catalog or brochure printing take?

The production time depends on the quantity, paper type and selected binding. With digital printing, very fast production is possible, often within a few working days.

Which publication format should I choose?

The choice of format mainly depends on the type of content and intended use. Portrait format is the most suitable for text-based publications and catalogs, landscape format allows a wider display of photographs, while square format is an excellent choice for creative projects.

Can I also order cover enhancement?

Yes. Covers of catalogs, brochures or books can be enhanced with matte or gloss lamination, 3D UV varnish or metallic foil. Such finishes improve the visual effect and increase durability.

How should I prepare the file for publication printing?

The file should be prepared in PDF format with bleed and correct safety margins. Detailed instructions for print file preparation can be found on our instructions page.
