Roll label printing – a key factor in product labeling and brand recognition

A label is often the first contact a customer has with a product. In addition to technical information, it must also present the product visually, highlight the brand and create trust at first glance. That is why high-quality roll label printing is important both from the product labeling point of view and from the product’s sales performance perspective.

Individually printed roll labels play a key role in product labeling and presentation. They provide customers with important information, strengthen brand identity and influence the purchase decision.

In addition to their informative function, high-quality roll labels are also a powerful marketing tool that creates an excellent first impression and increases product recognition.

With precise printing, appropriate materials and professional production, labels can be fully adapted to the product, method of use and environmental conditions.

Properly selected labels improve the visual effect of the product and increase its selling power on the shelf.

Today, a label is no longer just a data carrier, but an important part of the packaging and the brand. Especially for products placed on retail shelves, it must combine functionality, durability and aesthetic appearance. This is why, when choosing roll labels, it is important that the material, adhesive, die-cutting method and print quality work as a whole and are adapted to the actual use of the product.

Self-adhesive labels on roll – a professional solution for industrial product labeling

Self-adhesive labels on roll represent the standard of modern product labeling in the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, logistics and industrial sectors. They enable high-resolution printing, precise die-cutting, optimal material customization and efficient manual or machine application. Whether you need smaller series or larger runs, digital label printing offers flexibility, fast production and cost efficiency without tooling costs when using CNC cutting.

Self-adhesive labels are a key element of the product’s visual identity and informational compliance. They are used for labeling, identification, traceability and product promotion in different industrial environments. Label materials have adhesive applied on the reverse side, which enables permanent or temporary adhesion to various surfaces – glass, plastic, metal, cardboard or other packaging materials.

Labels are usually printed with text, graphics, logos and identification elements (EAN codes, QR codes, serial numbers), which enables clear communication of key product information and compliance with legislation.

In practice, the terms label and sticker are often used interchangeably, but in industrial production the difference lies mainly in the intended use, printing technology and type of material.

Stickers intended for decorative or promotional applications (vehicles, shop windows, outdoor advertising) are usually produced with large-format technologies (UV, Latex, Solvent), while self-adhesive roll labels are optimized for precise printing of smaller formats and industrial application.

Due to the smaller dimensions of labels, the use of high-resolution printing technology is crucial, ensuring sharp small text, accurate color transitions and stable repeatability across runs.

At Demago Print, we offer both label printing and self-adhesive sticker printing, using modern digital technology and certified self-adhesive materials that ensure premium print quality (HP Indigo).

The choice of technology directly affects the final product. Material printed from sheets is generally supplied as stickers on sheets, while material printed from rolls is supplied as labels on roll – optimized for manual or machine application.

We print from sheets or from rolls

We print from sheets in the size 500 × 700 mm (Cut-sheet) or from rolls with a width of 33 cm and length up to 2000 m (Roll-to-Roll system).

The correct choice of format is essential

Because labels are intended for various industrial applications, the following must be taken into account when choosing the right format:

– product purpose
– type of packaging
– storage conditions (moisture, temperature, UV exposure)
– label lifespan
– legislative requirements
– method of application (manual or automatic)

We understand that choosing the material, adhesive and technology is not always simple, which is why we have prepared an overview of the basic features and professional guidelines that will help you choose the optimal solution for your project. For additional questions, we are available every working day between 8:00 and 16:00.

Self-adhesive labels on roll are therefore suitable both for smaller test series and for more organized industrial production, where traceability, print precision, compliance with legislation and reliable application to different packaging types are important. With the right choice of material, adhesive and production method, the label can be fully adapted to the product, method of use and storage conditions.

Adhesives – selection according to conditions of use

Different types of adhesives are available: permanent adhesive, strong (hot melt) adhesive, removable adhesive, adhesive for demanding conditions... The correct adhesive choice is crucial for the durability of the label on different surfaces and at different temperatures.

Adhesives for label materials differ in their characteristics and properties, and we choose them according to the label material, the surface to which the label will be applied, usage conditions and other factors.

The type of adhesive used for self-adhesive label materials is of key importance, as it affects adhesion strength, durability and suitability for a specific application.

An adhesive is applied to the base material, selected according to the substrate to which the labels are applied as well as atmospheric conditions during application, storage and use of the product.

If the wrong type of adhesive is selected, labels may curl or even detach from the surface, or it may not be possible to remove them when required, so we advise careful selection.

Types of adhesives for labels

Types of adhesives and applications:

• Permanent adhesive: the most common choice for roll labels. Suitable for glass, plastic, metal and cardboard. Resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations.

• Hot melt / Extra permanent adhesive: very strong initial tack. Ideal for rough or uneven surfaces and more demanding industrial applications.

• Removable adhesive: suitable for temporary labels and promotions. Allows removal without adhesive residue.

• Deepfreeze adhesive: special adhesive for frozen products (down to -10°C). Suitable for the food industry and cold chains.

• Cover up adhesive
Opaque black or gray adhesive for covering existing information or errors on packaging.

How to choose the right material for roll labels?

The choice of material is crucial for label durability, appearance and functionality. The right decision mainly depends on the method of use and the conditions to which the product will be exposed.

For food and beverages
For products exposed to moisture or refrigeration (bottles, cans, juices), we recommend PP or PET materials, as they are resistant to condensation and low temperatures.

For cosmetics and personal care products
For softer packaging (tubes, bottles), the best choice is PE material, which adapts to the surface and prevents label wrinkling.

For industrial products
Where high mechanical or chemical resistance is required, PET material is suitable, ensuring a long label lifespan.

For a premium look
For wine labels or luxury products, we recommend design or metallized papers, which emphasize the prestige of the product.

For temporary or promotional campaigns
Paper materials are a cost-effective solution for short-term campaigns.

Roll labels for different industries

Self-adhesive roll labels are used in many industries – from the food and cosmetics industry to pharmaceuticals, logistics and industrial manufacturing. The choice of the right material, adhesive and label shape always depends on the type of product, packaging and usage conditions (moisture, temperature, food contact, mechanical stress).

Labels for beverages
Labels for bottles, cans, juices, mineral waters and energy drinks must withstand moisture, condensation and refrigeration. For such products, we recommend PP or PET materials with durable adhesives that ensure reliable adhesion even in cold conditions.

Labels for jars
Jams, honey, sauces and compotes often use paper or synthetic labels that emphasize the natural look of the product. The label must ensure good readability of information and durability during storage or transport.

Labels for food products
Labels for dairy products, dry foods or desserts must meet legislative requirements while also highlighting the brand on the retail shelf. The choice of materials suitable for food contact and refrigerated conditions is important.

Labels for cosmetics
Cosmetic products require labels resistant to moisture, oils and mechanical stress. PP or PE materials are often used, as they adapt well to curved packaging surfaces (tubes, bottles, flacons).

Labels for vape products
Labels for electronic cigarettes and e-liquids must, in addition to aesthetic appearance, also ensure compliance with legislation (TPD). The material must be resistant to liquids and mechanical stress.

Safety labels
Industrial and safety labels are used for hazard warnings, equipment or chemical marking and ensuring a safe working environment. They are often made of PET materials with very durable adhesives.

Choosing the right industry group is a good first step in selecting material, adhesive and finishing. Different products have very different requirements – from refrigerated conditions and contact with moisture to adapting to soft packaging or achieving a premium shelf appearance. That is why roll labels are always the result of combining technical requirements and sales appearance.

Label die-cutting – CNC or classic die-cut labels?

Labels on roll are die-cut with a classic tool (die-cut) or with digital CNC cutting without making a tool. The choice mainly depends on the run size, shape and cost optimization.

Label die-cutting is a key finishing step by which the final label shape or dimension is defined and separated from the liner. Labels are most often in regular shapes, rectangular or round, but of course they can also be made in irregular shapes.

Classic label die-cutting (Die-Cut) takes place on a rotary die-cutting machine using a die-cutting tool or magnetic die, which by pressure cuts or scores the final shape into the self-adhesive material.

This is followed by the removal of excess material (matrix), cross-cutting and rewinding of labels into rolls of suitable width. Because it is a modular machine, the labels can also be varnished or laminated.

The greatest advantage of die-cutting with a die-cutting tool is certainly the machine speed, which is why this finishing method is suitable for runs of at least 500 pcs and above.

Digital label cutting (Cnc-Cut) is a digital process of label cutting in which no die-cutting tool or die is required, as cutting is performed with cutting knives mounted in cutting heads that are computer-controlled and detect markers via an optical camera, cutting with exceptional precision.

This is followed by the removal of excess material (matrix), cross-cutting and rewinding of labels into rolls of suitable width. Because it is a modular machine, the labels can also be laminated.

The biggest advantage of digital cutting technology is, of course, the possibility of cutting any dimension and shape without using a die-cutting tool, which means the tooling cost is eliminated.

Compared to classic die-cutting, this type of finishing is slower, which is why it is suitable for quantities of 100-5000 pcs.

Classic label die-cutting

Die-Cut finishing
A fast and cost-effective solution for larger quantities of labels in standard shapes.

Digital label die-cutting

CNC Cut finishing
A flexible tool-free solution for smaller and medium series and irregular shapes.

Classic die-cutting is especially suitable for larger quantities, where processing speed is an important factor. On the other hand, digital CNC cutting offers much greater flexibility in shapes and quantities, as it does not require tool production. Therefore, the choice between the two technologies usually depends on the run size, complexity of shape and cost optimization of the project.

Do you need labels in regular or irregular shapes?

Choose the cutting technology according to quantity, shape and cost optimization – from classic die-cut finishing to digital tool-free CNC cutting.

Manual or machine application of labels

Labels on roll are suitable for manual application, semi-automatic application and fully automatic machine labeling. For machine application, correct roll orientation, inner core diameter and winding direction are important.

Labels on roll are an important element in industrial labeling and are often used for product marking, packaging and other applications where automated and continuous labeling or adhesion to products is required.

Because labels on roll are supplied on long rolls, they ensure uninterrupted supply and smooth operation of labeling devices.

Machine application of labels is often used in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics industry, packaging industry, logistics and many other sectors.

The advantages of machine label application include:

• increased production efficiency
• greater application precision
• faster processing of large product quantities

This is especially important in environments with high production capacity, where manual label application is impractical or inefficient.

When choosing machine label application, pay attention to the following technical parameters:

label position on the roll label orientation (A1 – A8) inner core diameter (25 mm, 40 mm or 76 mm) maximum outer roll diameter number of labels per roll gap between labels

For labels intended for manual application, this information is not important, as the labels are applied without machines.

Labels for manual application can be supplied:

• on rolls
• on a roll with a width of 33 cm (Roll to Roll)
• on sheets of approximately 30 × 33 cm (Roll to Sheet)

Correct technical preparation of the roll is crucial for automatic labeling, as it ensures smooth machine operation and reliable label application to the product.

Labels for machine application
Technical parameters for machine application of labels
For labels intended for automatic labeling, proper technical preparation is very important. An incorrect winding direction, unsuitable core diameter or incorrect spacing between labels can cause application problems. Therefore, for machine use it is recommended to verify technical requirements in advance and adapt the labels to the machine on which they will be used.
